Orthodontist in Huntersville
What is an Orthodontist?
Orthodontists are qualified dentists, who after graduating from dental school, further their education at an accredited orthodontic residency program. This training lasts at least two to three years—sometimes more. By learning about tooth movement (orthodontics) and guidance of facial development (dentofacial orthopedics), orthodontists are the uniquely educated experts in dentistry to straighten teeth and align jaws.
Orthodontists, like Dr. Selden, diagnose, prevent and treat dental and facial irregularities. They limit their practices to orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics. Orthodontists treat a wide variety of malocclusions (misaligned aligned teeth and/or jaws) and regularly treat young children, teens and adults.
Why Straighten Teeth?
Straight teeth can help you effectively bite, chew and speak. It also contributes to healthy teeth and gums. Properly aligned teeth and jaws may alleviate or prevent dental health problems. In addition, an attractive smile is a beautiful benefit of orthodontic treatment and can contribute to improved self-esteem, self-confidence and self-image at almost every age.
When teeth are properly aligned, they are less prone to decay and gum disease. Straight teeth collect less plaque. Bacteria in plaque feed on the carbohydrates that we eat and drink. This bacteria helps to produce acids that can cause cavities. Plaque can also increase the risk for periodontal disease. Also, when teeth are properly aligned, it is easier to keep teeth clean.
What is the Duration of Treatment?
The duration of treatment can vary between one and three years, depending on your individual treatment plan. During your consultation with our doctor, we will discuss all of your orthodontic options and provide an estimate of how long your treatment may take. There are many things that can impact the duration of treatment, including:
- If you have already received early orthodontic treatment from an orthodontist, the necessary steps for treatment have already been taken. This may help shorten the time you may need to wear your braces.
- Since each person requires a unique treatment plan, the treatment that you will need will determine how long you will be wearing braces.
- If you are willing to take care of your braces and follow the instructions that we recommend, it will have a positive and direct impact on your treatment. Taking care of your braces can help shorten your treatment time.
