Here at Selden Orthodontics, we’re often asked how much braces will cost. The answer to that question can be surprisingly complex, as there are a number of contributing factors that go into calculating the total cost of treatment. These include the extent of the orthodontic issues, the age of the patient, the location of the orthodontist you choose, and much more.
Although the cost of braces will vary from case to case, we can still give you a general idea of the average cost. For a child, treatment with braces can run anywhere from $3-7K, while adult braces are usually about $5-8K in total. We know that braces can be a significant investment for most families, but the benefits are significant! Let’s take a closer look at some of the factors that go into the total cost of braces.
The type of braces
Orthodontic appliances of all kinds can correct a wide variety of issues, from simple to severe. Some, like Invisalign clear aligners, are better suited to mild and moderate cases. Others, like metal braces, excel when used in complicated cases. Although they all tend to work in similar ways, each type of appliance will have differing components, which can affect the overall cost.
Traditional Metal Braces
Traditional metal braces are made of high-grade stainless steel, and straighten the teeth over time using metal brackets and archwires. Today’s braces are more comfortable and efficient than ever before, and you even have the option of adding colored rubber bands for a smile that matches your unique personality!
Clear Braces
Clear braces are often composed of ceramic brackets or brackets made from other clear materials. While they offer patients a more subtle treatment option, the ceramic brackets are a bit larger and more prone to breakage than their metal counterparts. For this reason, we tend to recommend them mainly for older teen and adult patients.
Champagne Braces
Our popular champagne-colored brackets are just as durable as traditional metal braces. They’re also discreet! The unique color blends in beautifully with your smile and the brackets are just as sturdy as metal braces. The contoured design keeps these braces comfortable and light.
Invisalign Clear Aligner Therapy
Instead of brackets and wires, the Invisalign system uses a series of customized aligners to straighten teeth gently over time. These aligners are almost invisible and also removable, giving patients extra freedom and flexibility. We also offer Invisalign Teen, which has special features designed specifically with the needs of our teen patients in mind.
In general, traditional metal brackets tend to be the most affordable orthodontics option, but most treatment methods have comparative costs.
The length of treatment
The total cost of braces will correspond to the level of treatment needed. For example, a patient who has a more complex or severe case will create more overall work for the orthodontist and require more follow-up appointments. This may translate to longer treatment times and higher fees than someone who has a milder orthodontic issue. Braces for every budget

For your convenience, we offer in-office payment plans and also accept all major credit cards including Visa, Mastercard, Discover, and American Express.
Some dental insurance plans will cover orthodontic treatment in part or full. We are in-network with Delta and Cigna DPPO, and our team will be happy to help with your insurance claims and paperwork. If your insurance will not cover treatment, and the braces are deemed to be medically necessary, the dental health care costs associated with them can sometimes be tax deductible. However, the cost has to exceed a certain amount before any deductions would kick in. If you’re interested in deducting the cost of braces, you’ll want to keep track of all expenses associated with them, including co-pays and check-up visits.
Treatment costs may also be covered by Medicaid if the braces are considered to be medically necessary. To learn more about this possibility, visit http://www.medicaid.gov/. It is important to ask about the percentage of coverage and the lifetime maximum before proceeding with treatment.
